Burglary information appeal Eyesore for tourism u by Ann Morgan

Dargaville Police are appealing for any information regarding a series of commercial burglaries which have occurred over the last two weeks. The Kaipara District Council offices were broken into on Monday, June 20 at around 3am. Greenways Trust was also broken into sometime between Saturday, June 25 3pm and 11am on Sunday, June 26. On the night of June 29 and the morning of June 30 there were a further five commercial burglaries, three of which occurred in Victoria Street and two in nearby Beach Road. Police cannot yet say if these incidents were linked or how many people were involved. “Police have launched an investigation and have today been collecting forensic evidence and gathering CCTV footage. The investigation is still in its early stages and police are working to establish the timeline of these events,” said senior sergeant Rob Huys. “The Dargaville Post Shop was burgled at around 4.45am. Unsuccessful attempts were made to take notes from a cash machine, but a small amount of cash was taken from elsewhere within the shop.

“A silver Toyota Rav was stolen during one of the Beach Road burglaries. This was later located, submerged in the Kaihu River near Memorial Park. Once again, we’re unsure if this is linked to the other burglaries but are very interested in any sightings of the vehicle overnight, or of any other suspicious activity in the area. “Dargaville Police are very concerned at this type of offending and want to reassure the community that we are taking this very seriously and have a number of staff working on this investigation.” Mr Huys says as a result of these crimes Dargaville Police will be increasing their patrols in these areas and says now is a good time to remind people to take security precautions seriously. In response a Kaipara District Council spokesperson says they are aware of the problem and agree it is disappointing and an eyesore. “We have been levying fines against offenders and will continue to do so. “This is an issue that is districtwide and we are assessing the location of some rubbish cages and considering if these can be removed and collections extended. “The collection is not ratepayer funded and relies on the purchase of blue bags. “We need the community’s support in helping to stop this, it is an offence. If people know who is doing this, then we would like to know. Reporting can be anonymous. These actions spoil the environment for everyone and cost residents through their rates when we have to clear up the mess.” ¢

The simplest act of turning on the kitchen tap will have a whole new meaning to two Dargaville women when they set off to install water filters in rural Vietnam. Gill McKinnon and Taylor Pull will trek to remote rural villages in Cao Bang, as part of an expedition organised by Childfund’s Trek Vietnam 2016 charitable initiative and need to raise $3,000 by August to help fund their trip in September. “The aim of this trip in the end is that the villagers in rural Vietnam will get clean water. For them, that will be absolutely life changing. Where It’s Easy to Live Road Works for July 2016

PUBLIC NOTICE – Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District. Please refer to program below for location of spraying which is subject to weather conditions. Drivers are advised to take extra care where work is being carried out on roads, regardless of whether there is a special speed restriction. Routine works during July include pothole repairs on unsealed and sealed roadways, as they are identified, and clearing culvert inlets and outlets. Maintenance patrols have been replacing many reflective edge marker pegs and this will continue as well as replacements and repairs to road signs. Area specific works planned during July include: • Minor bridge repairs throughout the District • Maintenance grading throughout the District when conditions are suitable • Unsealed pothole repairs throughout the District • Roadside vegetation spraying – North of Dargaville • Water table restoration – Hood, Waikara and Oneriri Roads • Unsealed road strengthening – Ups and Downs Road, Tramline and Ounuwhao Roads • Drainage Improvements – Ford and Pukemiro Roads There might be delays during July because of adverse weather, but work will still go ahead. To provide good roads economically, sometimes only spot grading and metalling is done rather than blanket metalling and grading. The fast-paced adrenaline sport blokarting is taking off in the Kaipara, and Tinopai man, Greg Schultz, is calling for thrill seekers to take up the activity with the possibility of forming a club. For those unfamiliar with this hobby, a blokart can be described as a compact land-yacht, and is manufactured by a New Zealand based company Blokart International Ltd. Greg says the activity is suitable for both young and old and for all levels of fitness and abilities. “We are lucky in the Kaipara district to have arguably one of the best locations in the world for karting with Ripiro being the longest drivable beach in New Zealand and with certainly some of the nicest scenery available. An added bonus is the relative closeness of the beautiful east coast beaches to sail when the p wind is from the east,” he says. “We look forward to sailing regularly on both coasts and exploring Ruakaka, Uretiti, Parkiri and Mangawhai.” Greg has reached up to 70.8km/h on the beach but says it’s not all about reaching top speeds. “There is nothing nicer than cruising down the beach on a sunny day with the breaking surf on one side and the rolling sandhills on the other.” Greg says the karts can even fit into the boot of a small car when folded down and take 10 minutes to assemble.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Sir Making our votes count In his last councillor constituency column my friend Graeme Ramsey noted: “If people realised the impact that regional council has on our communities, they would understand how important it is to get the best people that we can to represent us.” As a committed local community member and former council staffer, I know this is especially so now that the NRC has started the process of updating and replacing its current Air Quality Plan, Coastal Plan, and Water and Soil Plan with a single new Regional Plan. This community needs to be represented by someone who has the skills and experience to understand the issues and their implications for real people living their daily lives. With my lengthy background in the regulatory, planning and policy aspects

of local government at a senior management level I am well placed to achieve this. Local government, including regional councils, has legal obligations to meet. My contribution to the Northland Regional Council will be to put forward positive creative solutions to meeting those obligations. We do not have to choose between a healthy environment and a vibrant economy — we need to find ways to have both. We need an approach which is both practical and principled. The land care group I have formed and operated in the last few years in a small way sheds light on how this can be achieved. This too has prompted my decision to stand as the Kaipara member for the Northland Regional Council. I welcome further debate through your columns on these issues. Mark Vincent, Paparoa.

Mavis Pattinson was born and bred in Te Kopuru and over the 50 years she lived, worked and raised her children there, she has seen many changes. Mavis was born in the Te Kopuru annexe in 1927, and attended Te Kopuru School. She has fond memories of growing up in the township which she said once “had everything you could want. “There was a hospital and doctors’ rooms, a couple of grocery stores, a funeral director, joinery factory, post office, several cafes, drapery, a hairdressing salon, a gift shop, bus company and a taxi. It’s hard to believe now,” she says. “I learnt to swim in the big muddy Northern Wairoa river at the Te Kopuru wharf,” she said. “They put a fence out in the river and that was our swimming pool. Of course now Te Kopuru School has their own swimming pool.” This pool was dug out by hand by three fathers of students.

She also recalls a ferry which used to take residents and travellers from Te Kopuru to Helensville across the Kaipara Harbour. “Then we took a bus from Helensville and that’s how we got to Auckland.” When she left school she had a job in Dargaville at a shoe store and used to take the workers’ bus from Te Kopuru and back every day before working at one of the Te Kopuru grocery stores and then in the admittance office at the Te Kopuru Hospital. Mrs Pattinson lived in the heart of town until she and her husband and one of their three children moved to Tangowahine to farm, where she stayed until she retired in 1992 and moved into Dargaville. “It was a wonderful place to live,” she says. ¢

Conservation meets history More than 90 years after Prime Minister Gordon Coates used the election slogan ‘Coats off with Coates’, students from his old school at Matakohe did just that as they got their hands dirty planting trees at the Coates’ family farm.

Coates was the first New Zealand born elected PM and he was the first Minister of the Crown to be fluent in Maori. This is the third year students have taken part in harbour catchment plantings on the farm, now cared for by Heritage New Zealand at Ruatuna, under the guidance of Otamatea HarbourCare’s Mark Vincent. Mr Vincent says the planting is two fold, “firstly it is to help with reducing the amount of sediment and other nutrients which will find their way into the harbour and secondly it is to improve

the habitat for the smallest bugs to the biggest birds.” “The place is steeped in history so I just think it’s really cool the fact we’ve got the kids from the school that Gordon went to himself and they’re going out to work on his farm and doing something good for the environment.” Coates’ farm volunteer Mary Stevens set the scene on the day by providing a brief history from the time the property was owned by the Coates family and then took the students, teachers and parents on a special one-off guided tour of the homestead. ¢

Nevertheless, that’s exactly what’s happening in the green hill country north of Bangkok, where Thai state highway 21 heads up toward Phetchabun and the Tat Mok National Park. It’s a four lane tourist highway, bigger than New Zealand’s SH1, and by the roadside here the second branch of Dargaville main street restaurant Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee is taking shape. Behind a bamboo scaffold, the restaurant is nearing completion ahead of a planned opening date in August. A blessing by Buddhist monks invoking traditional good fortune set the foundation for this enterprise, a family affair set in motion by Don and Rose, residents and restaurateurs in Dargaville. Their own Thai eatery has enjoyed seasons of success, joining two others (Pad Thai and Shiraz) as recipients of a coveted ‘highly recommended’ award from TripAdvisor online in 2016. While

Built in 1918 at the meeting point of the Northern Wairoa and Kaihu rivers, boating club Commodore Rodney Wilson’s pride and joy was constructed by the Thompson family of boatbuilders, shortly after their move to Mangawhare from Aratapu. This same father and son operation were known for their fine work with kauri, having been commissioned to build small ‘whaleboats’ for no less than three Antarctic expeditions, including that of Ernest Shackleton in 1914. On

this mission one of the small boats was needed to enact a daring crossocean rescue attempt — and debate continues to this day over whether this whaleboat — christened the ‘James Caird’ was one of Thompson’s or a London-built replacement. Commodore Wilson’s launch is still a work in progress, but she’s a hale and tidy vessel for her 98 years. With care and attention she’ll no doubt be sailing the waters of the Northern Wairoa for decades to come. ¢

TE ROROA WHATU ORA & MANAWHENUA TRUSTS PROHIBITION (RĀHUI) NOTICE FOR THE ISSUING OF PERMITS TO HARVEST TOHEROA A Hui was held at Te Houhanga Marae, Dargaville in August 2014 to discuss the serious decline of Toheroa on Ripiro beach. The decision was made to place a rāhui on the taking of Toheroa on Ripiro beach from Maunganui Bluff to Tikitiki stream to help revive the critically depleted beds. Notice is hereby given by the Te Roroa Whatu Ora Trust and Manawhenua Board that there will be no issuing of permits to harvest Toheroa due to the decline and reducing stock numbers. Te Roroa excercises their manawhenua and customary authorities over their area. In this instance from the Maunganui Bluff to Tikitiki south Māhuta This rāhui has NOT been lifted.
